Buy and Sell recently spoke to Mary Owens, Chairwoman of the Irish Boarding Kennels & Cattery Association (IBKCA). The IBKCA have implemented a high standard of safety and care for their members who have boarding kennels all around Ireland giving assurance to people that their animals will be safe and looked after properly in the care of responsible professionals. Each member has their premises inspected and must meet certain criteria judged by comfort, safety, cleanliness and adequate resources such as food and water and quality of care. Mary says that they also want to be sure that kennel owners truly care for animals and that they have enough experienced staff to ensure they are properly exercised and looked after. She says it’s also very important that there is a genuine feel of warmth and kindness. All members must also undertake to commit to the IBKCA Code of Ethics.
The association was founded in 2006 by Michael McCarthy, an experienced dog trainer and lifetime member of the Irish Kennel Club because he saw a need to have proper regulation of kennels and catteries in Ireland. The association also runs seminars and educational courses on issues such as nutrition and grooming and health and safety and run certified animal first aid courses. They have business courses on how to promote and improve kennels and produce newsletters and swap advice at meetings where members can discuss their issues. Mary Owens has had over 30 years experience as a breeder and trainer and is a certified behaviourist and associate of the Pet Behaviour Institute. She runs her own kennels and cattery, Fircroft Dog training, Dog Boarding Kennels & Cattery in Rathangan Co Kildare and is a Life Associate Member of the Irish Kennel Club. If you are looking for dog boarding kennels or cat boarding with someone who provides thorough care for your dog or cat, always being attentive to their security, safety, and well-being; check out an IBKCA member. If you run a professional dog kennels or cattery and would like to meet like-minded professionals and help improve the standards and support in the Irish Boarding Kennel Industry, you can submit to join the IBKCA.
